We want things to be easy for our children, and we know from sad experience that the world can be unkind to girls who do not please, who speak out, who go their own way. But we know from experience, too, that the role of the good girl can be a hollow one, with nothing at the center except other people’s expectations where your character might have been.

Hello! I found your blog because my girlfriend and I are considering moving to Miami for a year or two and when I was researching the Opera tower I stumbled onto your blog. I was hoping you could give me some advice since you are currently living in Miami. First how do you like the Opera tower and is there any where else you wished you picked to live? Second how do you like Miami? I have been reading and have heard both extremes from people who love it to people who are afraid to walk outside during the day. If you have any info you can share I would really appreciate it! Thanks!!
Hi, Kyle! If you are looking to move to Miami, I would highly advise against living in Opera Tower. I found my apartment here from a distance, and, once here, found there are many buildings – with comparable prices – that are much nicer, safer, and with better management. If you would like a list of some buildings that are really nice, let me know and I can email you one!
As for living in Miami, I feel completely safe (relatively speaking, as safe as I would in any city!) in certain parts of town. Brickell, South Beach, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, parts of Coconut Grove…while there are of course certain parts of Miami that I refuse to go, the places that I listed are all places where I feel completely comfortable walking around by myself. As for liking Miami, if you speak Spanish and like Latin American culture (Cuban food, salsa dancing, etc.), you will like it a LOT, especially if you are open to trying new things. If you are into surfing, swimming, fishing, going to the beach, etc., you will like it a LOT. Like with any city, you get out of it what you put it! It all depends on your attitude, I think. Let me know if you have any more questions! :)
Thanks for getting back to me with some advice, I really appreciate it! I know how you feel about not knowing what to do in life, we just graduated college in May and are pretty much in the same situation. I am pretty fortunate that I can do some work from home which allows me to be able to move anywhere in the country. Coming from a very small town in the snowy northeast I can’t wait to move somewhere warm and more exciting. As you know its so difficult to find a good apartment from the other side of the country; so if you had a few places in mind I would really appreciate if you could email it to me. We are going to take a trip down and visit a few buildings and it makes it so much easier if you have advice from someone who is in the area, forums and online reviews only go so far! I highly doubt we will be spending the rest of our lives in Miami but I think it would be really fun for a year or two and experience something different. I wish you the best of luck figuring out whats next for you and thanks again for your help!
